Jefferson City, MO — A New Year’s Day vehicle crash into a Jefferson City building left one person dead and another injured, authorities said, as investigators work to determine what caused the vehicle to enter the structure.
The Jefferson City Fire Department said crews were called at about 1:54 p.m. Thursday to the 3300 block of North Ten Mile Drive for a report of a vehicle that had struck a building. When firefighters arrived, they found the vehicle had hit the side of the structure, pushing into a living area and striking an occupant, according to a fire department press release cited by local media.
What officials have confirmed
Fire officials said the vehicle had already been backed out of the building by the time crews arrived. The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the person struck inside the building was transported for treatment and later died, authorities said.
Fire personnel also used specialized shoring equipment to stabilize the building until repairs can be made, the release said.
Questions remain about the location
Some early reports described the site as an assisted living facility, but officials have not publicly confirmed the type of property involved or released the names of those affected.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
