New York, NY – For nearly three years, the consumer AI race has revolved around a single interface: the chatbot. Companies competed to build systems capable of writing better emails, summarizing longer documents, answering increasingly complex questions, and generating everything from software code to photorealistic images. Yet despite trillions of dollars in investment, one part of the experience remained largely unchanged. After the AI finished talking, the user still had to do all the work.
That is changing now.
Miami-based startup Brea.ai this week introduced a consumer AI platform built around a different premise—not that artificial intelligence should simply provide better answers, but that it should carry out work on behalf of the user. Rather than opening another application or learning a new interface, users communicate with Brea the same way they would text another person, including through Apple’s iMessage. A request such as,
“Find the cheapest nonstop flight to Miami next weekend and book the best option”
or
“Reply to every important email I missed today and schedule any meetings”
is intended to trigger the necessary research and actions rather than returning a list of instructions for the user to complete manually.

The product enters the market as technology companies increasingly shift their attention from conversational AI toward so-called AI agents—software designed to complete multi-step tasks across websites and applications with minimal human involvement. Industry leaders including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Microsoft have all signaled that autonomous agents represent one of the next major frontiers in artificial intelligence. The challenge has been creating products that ordinary consumers can use without learning complicated prompts, workflows or automation software.
Brea believes the answer is deceptively simple: don’t change user behavior.
“People already know how to send a text message,” said Isaac Rami, co-founder of Brea.ai. “We don’t think consumers wake up wanting another AI app. They just want something that gets things done. If you can text a friend, you already know how to use Brea.”

That philosophy has influenced nearly every aspect of the product. Instead of requiring users to build automations or configure complex workflows, Brea focuses on natural language. Users describe the outcome they want, while the platform determines the sequence of actions required to accomplish it. According to the company, the assistant integrates with more than 3,000 applications and supports over 1,000 pre-built workflows, allowing it to coordinate work across calendars, email providers, messaging platforms, browsers, productivity software and countless other online services.
Perhaps the company’s most compelling marketing has not come from advertising at all, but from the reactions of early users.

Since opening early access, Brea has encouraged customers to record themselves using the platform for the first time. The resulting user-generated videos follow a remarkably similar pattern. Someone opens iMessage, sends what appears to be an ordinary text, and waits. Moments later, as the assistant begins researching information, navigating websites, organizing data or completing the requested task, the camera shifts from the phone to the user’s face. The expression is often the same: surprise.
The reactions have become part of the product’s appeal. Unlike many AI demonstrations that focus on benchmark scores or technical capabilities, the videos capture something immediately understandable. Viewers are not watching an AI produce another paragraph of text. They are watching work disappear.
That distinction reflects a broader shift taking place throughout the AI industry. The first wave of generative AI dramatically improved how people accessed information. The next wave appears increasingly focused on execution. Instead of asking AI to explain how to plan a vacation, consumers are beginning to expect software that researches destinations, compares flights, recommends hotels, builds itineraries and completes bookings with little additional input.
“There’s a meaningful difference between helping someone and doing something for them,” Rami said. “The biggest bottleneck today isn’t intelligence. It’s execution.”
Whether consumers are ready to trust AI with increasingly important tasks remains an open question. Agentic systems must navigate issues involving privacy, permissions, reliability and user confidence before they become mainstream. Even the largest technology companies continue to approach autonomous actions cautiously, often requiring explicit user approval before completing sensitive requests.
Brea argues that trust will develop the same way it has with previous consumer technologies: through repeated success. The company says its goal is not to replace existing software but to sit on top of the tools people already use, allowing users to continue relying on familiar services while reducing the number of manual steps required to accomplish everyday tasks.
That vision could resonate as consumers grow increasingly overwhelmed by digital complexity. The average knowledge worker now moves between dozens of applications every day, switching continuously between email, calendars, messaging platforms, browsers, spreadsheets and collaboration software. Each task may require only a few clicks, but the cumulative effect has become one of the defining frustrations of modern work.
Brea is betting that people no longer want software that simply makes those clicks more efficient. They want software that eliminates them altogether.
Whether the startup succeeds will depend on more than technology. Consumer AI has become one of the most competitive markets in Silicon Valley, with both startups and established technology companies racing to define what comes after the chatbot. Yet history suggests that major computing shifts are often driven less by raw capability than by interface. Search replaced directories. Touchscreens replaced physical keyboards. Smartphones replaced dozens of standalone devices.
Brea.ai believes the next interface may be something even simpler.
A text message.
If that prediction proves correct, the future of artificial intelligence may not be measured by how convincingly machines can converse. It may be measured by how much work users no longer have to do themselves.
