WASHINGTON — The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has finalized a 2.4% payment increase for skilled nursing facilities in fiscal year 2027, providing modest relief to operators facing persistent workforce and inflationary pressures.
The final rule, announced Wednesday, applies to the Skilled Nursing Facility Prospective Payment System (SNF PPS). While the increase falls short of what some industry advocates had sought, it represents a continuation of incremental reimbursement growth for the sector.
The payment update comes as nursing homes grapple with rising labor costs, supply chain disruptions, and evolving regulatory requirements. According to the Medicare Trustees Report released last month, skilled nursing facility services accounted for approximately $31 billion in Medicare spending in 2025.
Industry groups have expressed mixed reactions to the announcement. The American Health Care Association noted that while any increase is welcome, the 2.4% adjustment may not fully offset cost pressures, particularly as facilities invest in technology and workforce development to meet changing care demands.
The final rule also includes technical adjustments to case-mix classification and quality reporting requirements. CMS has indicated that these changes aim to improve payment accuracy while reducing administrative burden for providers.
Looking ahead, operators remain concerned about broader fiscal pressures, including potential Medicaid funding changes at the state level and the ongoing transition to value-based care models. The payment increase takes effect October 1, 2026.
