Columbia, SC — A 41-year-old Irmo man is facing serious felony charges after state investigators say he stole nearly $15,000 from a vulnerable nursing home resident.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced Friday that Demetrias Antonio Roberts was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of exploitation of a vulnerable adult and one count of breach of trust with fraudulent intent involving more than $10,000.

According to investigators, Roberts allegedly accessed the victim’s bank account without authorization and used the funds for his own benefit. Authorities say the transactions — which included multiple purchases and withdrawals — totaled $14,862.90.

Alleged Unauthorized Transactions Spanned Months

The case was investigated by South Carolina’s Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud (VAMPF) unit. Officials say the unauthorized transactions occurred between July 18 and Nov. 13, 2025.

Investigators determined that none of the financial activity benefited the victim. Instead, authorities allege the funds were used strictly for Roberts’ personal expenses.

At the time of the alleged thefts, the victim was legally classified as a vulnerable adult and was residing in a nursing home in Irmo.

Potential Penalties and Next Steps

If convicted, Roberts could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of at least $5,000.

He was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center on Thursday. The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.

The charges highlight ongoing efforts by state authorities to combat financial exploitation involving vulnerable adults, a growing concern in long-term care settings across the country.
