Gunfire Erupts Inside Kansas Senior Care Facility, Worker Charged With Attempted Murder

Leawood, KS — An early-morning dispute between two employees at a Johnson County senior care facility escalated into gunfire inside the building, prompting an attempted first-degree murder charge. No one was injured in the incident, according to police and court records.

Leawood police responded around 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 10 to The Healthcare Resort of Leawood after receiving reports of an armed disturbance. Investigators say a verbal argument near the nurse’s station intensified when one employee allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at a co-worker.

The suspect, identified in court documents as 32-year-old Darrick Dekovan Miller of Kansas City, Missouri, allegedly opened fire inside the facility. The other employee returned fire, but neither man was struck. Residents were not harmed and were not directly involved, authorities said. Officers later found several bullet impacts in the area.

Security Footage and Arrest

According to court filings cited in local reports, surveillance video shows Miller entering the building using an employee key card before walking toward the nurse’s station and firing a handgun. He then fled on foot.

Investigators say he crossed Nall Avenue into neighboring Overland Park. Police recovered multiple 9mm shell casings inside the facility. Traffic cameras reportedly captured images along the suspected escape route, and officers later identified a vehicle tied to an associate at an Overland Park apartment complex. A K-9 unit searching nearby located a black and silver handgun near a stand of trees, according to the affidavit.

Overland Park police detained Miller later that morning and transferred him to Leawood authorities. Court documents state he declined to speak with investigators.

Miller was formally charged with attempted first-degree murder on Feb. 11 in Johnson County District Court. The level 1 felony carries a potential life sentence under Kansas law. His bond was set at $750,000 cash or surety. He remained in custody as of Feb. 13, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Feb. 18. Authorities have not disclosed a motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
